On November 16, 1959, The Sound of Music starring Mary Martin premiered on Broadway. The musical was based on a 1949 memoir, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers, by Maria Von Trapp. However, the musical bears little resemblance to what the real family endured in making their brave escape from Nazi Germany. Nonetheless, the musical and the sound track became huge hits and are still popular today.
