Lewis and Clark depart for the East Coast, March 23, 1806

On March 23, 1806, Lewis and Clark left the Pacific Coast and Fort Clatsop where they had spent the winter. They were eager for home. Their winter stay along the Columbia River had been plagued by rainy weather and not enough to eat. They knew the trip ahead would not be easy; they faced the rugged slopes of the Rockies among other challenges. At least this time, they knew a little more about what was to come.
