On April 8, 1916, a car race in California killed five. Then, racing took place along streets. This race was held on Grand Boulevard in Corona. The driver lost control when the wheel of his car snapped off; the car crashed through a barrier, killing the driver, his ride-along mechanic, and three spectators. Five others were seriously injured. These accidents led to building tracks for car races. Indianapolis Motor Speedway–an early one–was completed in 1909.
