On August 28, 1968, thousands of Vietnam War protesters battled police in the streets outside the Democratic Convention in Chicago while the Democratic Party members inside fought over the war platform. During the Cold War, the U.S. developed a policy by which it would intervene in countries deemed susceptible to communism. This led to U.S. involvement in Vietnam. Eventually the Dem candidacy went to Hubert Humphrey who favored the war. But the anti-war protests continued all over the U.S.
