Beginning of US Navy Oct 13, 1775

On October 13, 1775, the Continental Congress authorized America’s first naval force. When the Revolutionary War began and colonists learned that a British naval fleet was on its way, Congress ordered that ships be organized.  Starting with only seven ships, the American naval forces managed to have several successes over British warships. When the Revolution was over, the Navy disbanded. Then in April 1778, the new government created the Department of the Navy.
