On May 30, 1911, the first Indianapolis 500 was held, and Ray Harroun drove his Marmon Wasp to victory. The track was built as an auto testing facility. The owners soon decided to make it a Motor Speedway, with a focus on one long race per year. To read more about the race, see Indy 500: Early Start in Racing.
