On November 11, 1918—or as it was often described–at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, the Great War ended. Germany was spent, and they faced imminent invasion. They signed an Armistice with the Allies on that date. The human toll of the war was enormous. The major countries involved each lost nearly a million or more lives. At least five million civilians died from disease, starvation, or exposure.
